UASBC Underwater Explorers Speakers Series - December 9

Wednesday, December 9, 2020

Dear UASBC Members:

Please join the UASBC on Zoom at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 for a presentation by Maycira Costa about using historical charts to investigate changes in B.C.’s coastal kelp forests since the 1850’s.

Dr. Costa is a geography professor at the University of Victoria and she has been using an innovative method comparing British Admiralty Charts from 1856 to 1956 and satellite images to create a digital map of the changes in BC’s kelp distribution.  Kelp was considered a navigational hazard by the British, so they carefully annotated all kelp forests on their charts.  This new reference map will help address questions related to the habitats of salmon, herring and many other species that rely on kelp for protection and food. You can view the digital historical map here: http://uvicspectral.com/kelp

If you would like to attend, please send an email to keith@bossons.ca to get instructions on how to join the meeting.

Holding virtual Underwater Explorers Speakers Series presentations using Zoom is part of the UASBC’s response to the ongoing pandemic and restrictions on public gatherings.  Zoom is free to participants and relatively easy to use.  It provides good video conferencing and presentation capabilities and is being widely used by other organizations to host events and presentations on-line.

We hope to see you soon!
