UASBC Lower Mainland Underwater Explorers Speakers Series Presentation

Our next lower mainland Underwater Explorers Speakers Series talk will be held on Wednesday November 27 at the Vancouver Maritime Museum at 7:30pm.

Our speaker is well known Marine Artist John Horton.  John will be making a presentation on the voyages of Captain George Vancouver to the Pacific Northwest.  John uses his own original art work to bring life to this fascinating story of exploration.

The meeting is open to non-members, so feel free to bring a guest or two along.  The details of the talk are provided below.

Cruising Washington, British Columbia and Alaska in the wake of Captain George Vancouver

This presentation has approximately 20 of the 53 paintings John has produced of the west coast showing places Captain Vancouver charted and named -from Washington to Alaska.  John has travelled 4 times to Alaska, on his own converted 52’ admiral’s launch, to research all these intriguing facts about this voyage, and he has been to every single location and knows the story that inspired the painting.

Learn the inside stories about Vancouver’s exploration of the coast, including the discovery and protection of a Shaman’s burial cave; his friendship with England’s enemy, the Spanish, and many other stories.  Vancouver’s extended survey of the northwest coast was an astonishing achievement. His voyage proved to be the longest continuous journey of discovery under sail in history, both in time and in distance covered. Neither Cook nor Columbus, nor any other explorer, equaled this accomplishment.  And yet, his life ended at 40, in poverty and with no recognition.  Why?
